There was so much fanfare when they arrived and the hopes were high that they would be big stars at Kaizer Chiefs, but they never really took off. It happens all the time in football. Some players just cannot handle the strain of playing for a big club like the Chiefs, while others are not given enough opportunities. Here are five big stars who flopped their career at Chiefs.
Emmanuel Letlotlo
In the squad’s MDC team, the youngster had been scoring freely, and his innate cleverness was seen as a quality that may set him apart in the senior team. There was a lot riding on him, and he was the appropriate height and size to play as a powerful striker for the country’s most popular team.
But off-the-field issues caught up with him and derailed his progress in the senior team. He was later dumped by the club as he faced numerous issues. He is still struggling to resuscitate his career and was at relegated GladAfrica Championship side, Bizana Pondo Chiefs last season.
Kabelo Mahlasela
When he joined Amakhosi, “Skudu,” as Mahlasela is known in local football, made it plain that he was fulfilling his father’s goal. Teboho “Disco” Mahlasela’s father, Teboho “Disco” Mahlasela, had also played professionally for Moroka Swallows and Jomo Cosmos, but never got the chance to play for Chiefs as he had hoped.
Kabelo was a tremendous hit at Bloemfontein Celtic, and his ability was his best attribute. Injuries, on the other hand, handed Kabelo a major setback, and he was unable to make the Chiefs’ first squad. He was then loaned to Polokwane City till the completion of his Naturena deal.

Bhongolethu Jayiya
Jayiya had all the makings of a major star at Kaizer Chiefs, having shown glimpses of being a great player at both Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City. However, he never got into gear and appeared to have weight concerns, so he was eventually sent packing.
Siphelele “Stash” Ntshangase
When he first arrived at Chiefs, Stash dubbed himself the “missing master piece” in the Amakhosi’s puzzle. He promised ‘Champaign passes,’ but towards the conclusion of his tenure at the club, he ended up drinking more champagne off the field.
Some still believe he wasn’t given a fair shot or that he never had a coach with the Chiefs who played in his way. He was released, though, with three months left on his contract.
Gustavo Paez
During the Steve Komphela era, he joined the Chiefs. To be fair, the Venezuelan striker didn’t have much of a track record before he joined Chiefs, with only 11 goals to his name. This is how he earned the moniker “Ma-11,” but he was overhyped and criticized for not being given enough opportunities to demonstrate his true scoring skills. But he struggled to make an impact with the Chiefs and was finally dismissed.
