Gavin Hunt, the coach of Kaizer Chiefs, has clarified why Amakhosi have performed well in the CAF Champions League than in domestic matches.
After a convincing 4-0 quarterfinal first-leg win over Tanzanian giants at FNB Stadium over the weekend, Amakhosi has a foot in the Champions League semi-finals. The second leg of the match will take place in Tanzania on Saturday.
In the Champions League, the Soweto giants have five victories, one less than they have in their 27 league matches this season.
“I think the Champions League is a game suited to this squad of players, because of what we’ve got.
It’s a longer, more linear game, because it comes at you, while in the PSL, the players outrun the ball. As a result, the Champions League is much slower, which fits the community of players we have here,” Hunt said after the game.
After a tough first season with the Soweto giants, the former Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United coach promised to return stronger.
“I’ve always kept a low profile. I’ve kept it low-key. There’s a lot of noise going around, you know. I don’t gloat, don’t say too much. I just let the records speak. I don’t get depressed easily, but this season has been really trying for me. It took a lot of time, effort, and hard work to get here. So it’s all right. Personally, I am certain that I can emerge stronger. That is undeniable. Believe me when I say that next year I will be much better.”
