Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on a number of quality players in the current transfer window as those they had targeted have joined rival clubs.

Earlier this week, the news of Terrence Mashego joining Mamelodi Sundowns emerged yet the Bafana Bafana left-back was initially on the radar of Amakhosi.

And this is not the first transfer dealing that has gone a-begging for Chiefs as the same thing happened with Sipho Mbule from SuperSport United.

Both Cape Town City and SuperSport United confirmed Amakhosi’s intetest in Mashego and Mbule respectively but nothing came out of it.

Furthermore, Chiefs desperately needed a striker or two after parting ways with Leonardo Castro, Samir Nurkovic and Lazarous Kambole among others.

Bienvenu Eva Nga and Victor Letsoalo were targeted by Chiefs but they ended up joining Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United respectively.

And again, Chiefs had to scramble for the left-overs or look outside the South African borders for a striker. They managed to sign Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana.

WHO’S KAIZER CHIEFS’ OWN WORST ENEMY IN THE LOCAL TRANSFER MARKET?

All these failed transfer dealings point to Chiefs and not any other team although there is a perception that teams don’t want to do business with them.

In fact, it is Chiefs’ reluctance to splash the cash that is impacting the team’s performance and derailing their success on the pitch.

As things stand, Chiefs don’t look like a team ready to challenge Sundowns for honours because they can’t even compete with them in the transfer market.

And this has been going on for years, and their dusty trophy cabinet in the last seven years is testimony to that.

The last time Chiefs made a real statement in the transfer market was back in 2012 when they brought in the likes of Morgan Gould and Erick Mathoho among many others

That success was sustained for three years with Chiefs winning four trophies in the process, and since then, they haven’t been able to replicate that.

It is clear that if Chiefs are serious about ending their trophy drought, then investing on quality players should be top of their list going forward.
