Real Madrid has initiated preliminary conversations with United about signing the French center-back, which is expected to cost approximately £50 million. Man United could loan a star midfielder, for Raphaël Varane, Real Madrid are interested in bringing Van de Beek, 24, to the Bernabeu on a one-year loan with a 12-month option to buy.

United believes this gives them a significant bargaining chip in their pursuit of Varane, who is at the top of their center-back wish list. Varane, who is 28 years old, has one more season on his contract and can sign a pre-contract pact in January. The Spanish giants would love to keep him, but they also don’t want to lose him for nothing, especially given their current financial situation.

So United are more likely to play ball over Van de Beek, if it gives them a little wriggle room in signing Varane, who is also on Paris Saint-Germain’s radar. Ironically the Red Devils pipped Real to sign the Dutch midfielder in a £35m move from Ajax last summer.

Madrid had reached an agreement on personal conditions but had to call it off after failing to sell some of their current midfielders. They have, however, maintained contact with Van de Beek’s advisers since his relocation to Old Trafford turned into a nightmare.

hey are willing to pay a £2m loan fee and pick up all his wages ahead of a permanent deal next summer, when they expect to be in a healthier financial position. And Old Trafford top brass, keen to recoup much of their initial outlay, are prepared to bend a little if that means they get Varane, who has been with Real for ten years.

Ajax had previously approached United about a loan, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Van de Beek towards the end of last season that he still had faith in him. Van van Beek came to England as part of Holland’s new golden generation, but he only made four Premier League starts due to a lack of adaptability. He, on the other hand, has refused to rock the boat.

impressing Solskjaer and his coaching team with his attitude and commitment.

Meanwhile, forward Mason Greenwood has already started his pre-season training, a few days before United officially returns to work.

Greenwood, 19, was forced to pull out of England’s Euros squad with an underlying injury — but has been working with the conditioners and in the gym this week.
