Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has used a comparison to Arsene Wenger, when trying to explain his tactical switches on the weekend.
Amakhosi drew 1-1 with AmaZulu thanks to a controversial last-minute penalty, which was converted by Keagan Dolly.
Baxter once again made his substitutions quite late in the match and later cited the former Arsenal boss when trying to explain why opted to bring on Lebogang Manyama and Happy Mashiane.
“Arsene Wenger says ‘when you’re looking to win the game, get as many of your attacking players that can win you the game on the field as possible’ and basically we tried to accommodate all of them,” he told SuperSport TV.
Just give Happy a wide role and whip a few crosses in, get Lebo closer to the strikers and Bernard, get Keagan wide trying to move inside and then let Blom come up.
“It was just trying to get a bigger attacking unit if you want.”
Baxter, though, insisted that his team are close to finding the winning formula, if only they can erase small mistakes in their games.
“I think as I say the 10%, if we can improve the things, the critical phases that decide games of football, you know we played good football but need to get someone in to bury our chances,” he added.
“We can’t open the second half, when we say ‘don’t open up too much’ but we open up massively, make a mistake and they score. We can’t do that, that’s not the recipe for winning football. But it isn’t a lot to change to make a recipe for winning football.
“We’ll keep on working, we’ve always worked very hard and I hope the supporters make sure that they support them in this hard work because we’re trying to make something that will last a long time, not just a lucky win and then everybody is happy and can have a drink on the weekend.”
Chiefs have collected just six points from their opening six games in the DStv Premiership and will now face Chippa United and former Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt after the international break.
