According to the sources, the match officials responsible for the dubious penalty decision in the match between AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs have been punished after the review committee met this week.
Jelly Chavani is understood to have been put on ice by the SAFA Referees Review Committee for changing the outcome of the game, with Usuthu clearly in the driving seat for all three points in their DStv Premiership clash against Amakhosi on Saturday.
With coach Benni McCarthy’s side leading 1-0 in added time, Chavani, who was the referee in charge, blew his whistle for a spot kick when the ball looked to have come off defender Tapelo Xoki’s chest, not his arm.
The decision had not been immediate, it was only after Chavani consulted with the fourth official, Moeketsi Molelekoa, seconds later that he stopped play and awarded Chiefs the penalty, which was then converted by Keagan Dolly to give them a share of the spoils.
Information reaching the KosiBay crew is that both match officials have been suspended for a period of four weeks as their embarrassing call changed the outcome of the game.
The KosiBay crew also understands that the duo will not be allowed to be anywhere near a high-profile game for another two weeks, meaning they are only likely to be appointed for matches in the lower divisions or the reserve league.
