Benni McCarthy has made the huge claim that he knew, Kaizer Chiefs “don’t have the quality” to open up his AmaZulu defence.

The outspoken coach saw his side drop two points after Amakhosi received a controversial last-minute penalty.

However, instead of focussing on the incident, McCarthy praised his side’s players, who did everything he asked of them before a last-minute laps in concentration.

“It was a fantastic performance from the boys, we can’t fault them,” he said after the match.

“We said, if we marginalise our mistakes, if we don’t give them give-away, they won’t get into this game because they don’t have the quality to open us up, to break us through and then create clear goalscoring opportunities.

From the last few games that we’ve seen, they still yet finding their feet, so I knew that was a disadvantage for them.

“If we use the mobility that we have because they clearly went a little bit defensive, having a central defender, Njabulo Ngcobo in midfielder, with Nange and Cole Alexander.

“So we wanted to use the mobility of Mamela, Maduna and Cisse to get in behind, picking balls up in those little pockets and feeding to Bongs.

“It worked very well, we used the one-touch football, getting behind them and we scored a fantastic goal, going 1-0 up. We could’ve gone 2-0 up as well, but good save by the goalkeeper.

“Then you get the chances, you control the game, you are in possession of the ball and then just, us not being very smart by running down the clock and playing to maintain our 1-0 advantage because Kaizer Chiefs were pushing the game and they were pushing the numbers forward.

“And then yeah, it’s just a loss of concentration in the end.”

AmaZulu find themselves in ninth place with seven points from their first six DStv Premiership games this season. They will face TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League on 15 October after the international break.
