Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has explained Njabulo Ngcobo’s new role in his side’s 1-1 draw with AmaZulu on Saturday.
Baxter reverted back to a 4-3-3 after Chiefs’ recent run of two defeats and one draw, pushing Ngcobo into a midfield role alongside Cole Alexander and Phathutshedzo Nange.
The Englishman believes his tactics worked out, even though Ngcobo played more like a playmaker than a destructive midfielder.
“Well I have to say, Dube has been good in training and we wanted to go back to a 4-3-3,” he told the club’s media department.
“As the defensive midfielder, we didn’t want to use Cole the way we did in the last game, so we wanted to use Njabulo.
“It was new for him, he did ok. He took too many touches at times. He was playing more like a playmaker than a destructive midfielder.
“But, at times, he showed that he’s got qualities in that role and it released Cole and Nange to get higher into the box, so we got more bodies into the box, which is something we spoke about after our last game.
“When crosses were coming in, we were getting on the end in some of them.”
Chiefs drew the game thanks to a controversial last-minute penalty, which was converted by Keagan Dolly.
Amakhosi have now picked up six points from six DStv Premiership games, which finds them in 12th position on the log.
