According to coach Stuart Baxter, striker Leonardo Castro is currently being nursed back to full fitness in his native Colombia – leaving Amakhosi with only Samir Nurkovic and Khama Billiat as options.

With Lazarous Kambole clearly out of favour and currently on the club’s transfer list, Baxter has had to rely on those two.

But there is some good news on Castro…

According to reports, the forward will travel to Naturena at the end of the month, indicating that he will be ready to begin training with the rest of the squad and return to action as soon as possible.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns striker is in the final year of his contract, so being a part of the team is also beneficial to him, as he and the club will be discussing his future before June 30 next year.

Reports had initially suggested Castro’s return to play would be around Christmas, but that is not conclusive at the moment.

The Chiefs’ medical staff has not evaluated him since he left for Colombia to receive rehabilitation for what appears to be a long-term injury.

Castro made 39 appearances despite a topsy-turvy previous season under Gavin Hunt, who was fired eight months into his tenure at Naturena.

But it was his goal scoring ratio that was a concern – he only found the back of the net nine times, a figure Baxter will hope improves when he finally gets to use Castro.
