Makhehleni Makhaula, captain of AmaZulu FC, has confessed that the Durban club has failed to get into gear this season.
Following their nearly miraculous run that saw them finish second in the DStv Premiership last season, a lot was expected of AmaZulu this season.
Their performance guaranteed that the team qualified for the Caf Champions League. However, they have had a dismal start to the current season, losing to Mamelodi Sundowns and drawing with Swallows FC in the Premiership.
But Makhaula feels that all AmaZulu needs to turn things around is a win, which he believes they will get against SuperSport United in a league game on Tuesday afternoon.
“We are attempting to maintain a good attitude throughout the squad… “I try to remain optimistic at all times,” Makhaula remarked on Monday afternoon. “Things haven’t gone well for us in our first few games. But we are optimistic that things will improve.
“We know our potential; all we need to do now is start winning, which should happen tomorrow” (Tuesday). The fact that we are playing well and creating opportunities is a plus. The disadvantage is that we must strive to limit our surrendering, which was our strong suit previous season. If we can keep a streak of clean sheets and give the players up front the confidence they need to score goals, we’ll be in good shape. Even if we just score one goal and don’t surrender any more.
“But it’s a delicate balancing act… We need to play well, do the correct things, take opportunities when they come our way, and minimize chances against us so that teams don’t score against us.”
