Mamelodi Sundowns are still hopeful of signing three more players before the transfer window slams shut on August 31.
The Kosi understands that goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, as well as his SuperSport United teammates – the midfield duo of Sipho Mbule and Teboho Mokoena –, remain their priority targets.
Downs’ interest in the trio goes back several seasons, with SSU not keen to sell Williams, their skipper, and the two players they would rather see land moves abroad instead of joining their domestic rivals.
SSU were also waiting it out to see whether Mbule and Mokoena, who both have international buy-out clauses, would catch the eye of top European scouts at the Olympics in Tokyo this year.
Williams was also at the Games as the only over-aged player.
Mbule was withdrawn from the final squad on the eve of the tournament due to “medical reasons”, while Mokoena featured in all three matches against hosts Japan, France and Mexico – scoring a wonder goal in one of the games.
