Chiefs reclaimed the Carling Black Label Cup after defeating their Soweto rivals on penalties at Orlando Stadium on Sunday evening.
Kgaogelo Sekgota, Cole Alexander, Sifiso Hlanti, Phathutshedzo Nange and Brandon Peterson were all introduced in the second half, with Peterson making his mark with two saves in the shoo-out.
The Amakhosi coach was overly impressed with what he saw from all the signings on the day.
Peterson replaced Itumeleng Khune with about 15 minutes to go and it proved to be a masterstroke on the part of the fan-coach as Peterson made two superb saves from Wayde Jooste and Ntsikelelo Nyauza with Kgaogelo Sekgota scoring the decisive penalty to claim the bragging rights for the Amakhosi.
“I think our second-half performance warranted the result,” Baxter told SuperSport TV.
“It was an even first half. I thought it was a well-played game, one of the better derbies.
“We stepped up in the second half. Our movement around the box was much better. We looked more dangerous and I think when it goes to penalties, you’re just happy that you come out on top because it can go either way. Brandon was magnificent.”
When asked about the other new signings such as Sekgota, who made a good impression coming off the bench, Baxter responded:
“This game was information for me. For the supporters we’ve got to win it, we get that and it’s the old enemy so we always want to win. They staked a claim. I’m happy with the evening’s work and I think there are some shoots of green grass coming through.”
