Kaizer Chiefs have entered the race to sign a South African international star.
As a slew of South African teams are said to be interested in enticing Thabo Cele back home after his Portuguese club Cova da Piedade was demoted, the talented midfielder has made it plain that his goal is to stay in Europe.
Piedade, Cele’s second-tier club, experienced an extraordinary relegation following the cancellation of the Portuguese second division campaign a fortnight earlier due to the coronavirus epidemic.
While Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United are rumoured to be keen to sign Cele, the former SA Under-20 international has no plans to ply his trade locally any time soon.
“There’s interest for Cele, way before Olympics,” a source reveals.
“There’s been lots of calls and engagements in the past few weeks, not only South African teams but in Europe as well. His first option would be Portugal, second in Spain or other big countries, if that doesn’t happen, PSL will be his choice.”
The source further revealed that talks have been put on hold until after the Olympic Games.
“‘He is not rulling out any move of coming back, but that will depend on his first and second option. Kaizer Chiefs have made a contact, alongside KZN teams to sign him. They’ve contacted his representatives, but talks are on hold for now.”
As it Stands Kaizer Chiefs are in a competition with the likes of Fc Porto, Maritzburg United and Amazulu who are also in a race to sign him.
