The biggest success of the Glamour Boys on the African continent came in 2001, winning the Cup Winners’ Cup. Muhsin Ertugral’s coached side beat Angola’s Interclub in the final.
In what will be the second encounter between the two teams, Amakhosi will face the Egyptian giants in the continental final on Saturday.

Thanks to winning the Cup Winners’ Cup, Amakhosi played in the 2001 Super Cup, only to lose 4-1 to Egypt’s Al Ahly. Chiefs were crowned African Club of the Year in 2001 at the CAF awards ceremony in April 2002. The Glamour Boys participated most recently in the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Champions League.

First-ever meeting

In March 2002, Amakhosi faced the Red Devils in the Caf Super Cup, which was held at Alexandria Stadium in Egypt.

Chiefs, who were coached by Muhsin Ertugral, competed in the match since they were the 2001 African Cup Winners’ Cup champions, whereas Al Ahly had won the 2001 Caf Champions League.

Goal relives the thrilling match which produced five goals:

Al Ahly grab an early lead

After a defensive blunder by Amakhosi, Chiefs veteran Brian Baloyi was defeated just seven minutes into the encounter.

Khaled Bebo intercepted Marco Mthembu’s bad ball and sent his shot between the legs of Baloyi to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

After conceding against the North African giants, the Soweto giants had to push forward and look for an equalizer.

In the 14th minute, Ertugral’s team was granted a corner kick, and Cyril Nzama headed in from the resulting corner to make it 1-1.

Al Ahly’s lead is restored by Ghaly.

However, 15 minutes after parity was restored, the Red Devils equalized with Hossam Ghaly, who later went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

This time, it was Bebo who provided the assist, as he delivered a cross that was headed in by Ghaly at the far post to give Al Ahly a 2-1 lead at the break.

El-Hadary embarrasses Baloyi

After the restart, Al Ahly continued to press, and in the 64th minute, they were given a free kick within their own half.

The free-kick from legendary Egyptian goalkeeper Hossam El Hadary flew over opposite number Baloyi and into the net via the underside of the crossbar.

With the team down 3-1, the Turkish strategist responded by inserting Doctor Khumalo, one of South Africa’s best midfielders.

Unfortunately, Khumalo was past his prime at the time and was unable to alter the game’s complexion, and he announced his retirement from professional football a few months later.

Al Ahly’s victory is sealed by Abdel Hafeez.

Chiefs were obliged to rush forward in large numbers in the hopes of scoring at least two goals to tie the game, but they left holes in their defense.

They were punished by Al Ahly’s football director, Sayed Abdel Hafeez, who scored with a low deflected effort in the 69th minute to secure the 4-1 victory.

The encounter this weekend will be the second between Chiefs and Al Ahly.
