Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena is said to be a fan of Stellenbosch FC’s Junior Mendieta and might entice the Argentine striker to Chloorkop as the club continues its recruitment drive.

As reported by this website in March, Mendieta is believed to have piqued the interest of Kaizer Chiefs, who are on the lookout for players for the 2019 season, when they will be free to acquire new players due to the lifting of their transfer restriction. Mendieta initially joined the Western Cape on loan last season and racked up 21 appearances in the DStv Premiership while scoring three goals in the process.

According to the Mgosi squad, Amakhosi were preparing to sign the Argentinian playmaker to a pre-contract, but he ended up extending his time at Stellies instead. If the Chiefs are still interested in him, they will have to buy him from Stellies.

Our sources have been persuaded to think that Masandawana are interested in the 28-year-old, but Stellies are unwilling to let him go cheaply and have recently put him on a long-term contract.

“Money has never really been an issue at Sundowns but it becomes a problem when teams take advantage of that and slap us with high price tags in cases where you can see that the player does not necessarily rank in that kind of price. It has been like that with most teams whenever we approach, but we hope that we will be able to continue and conduct business and get the players we want,” a source revealed.

Meanwhile, as previously reported, Sundowns has extended the contracts of six of its marquee players and signed them to long-term contracts. Andile Jali, Rivaldo Coetzee, Themba Zwane, Lyle Lakay, Lebohang Maboe, and Mosa Lebosa have all stayed in Chloorkop for a long period of time our sources has been informed.
